Stephanie Abrams is an award-winning performer and director as well as contortionist and circus coach with over 30 years of experience. She began her performing career as a mime at the age of 13 and then “ran away” to San Francisco to join the circus just after high school. Legendary circus coaches, Master Lu Yi and Xia Ke Min took her under their wings, and she spent the next 4 years training intensely in contortion and acrobatics at the San Francisco School of Circus Arts (now SF Circus Center). As a contortionist, Stephanie has performed around the US and in Hong Kong, in films including Minority Report directed by Steven Spielberg, and even modeled for Pixar (rumored to have inspired the Elastigirl character in The Incredibles).

In 2000, Stephanie created Kinetic Theory Experimental Theatre- a mime and theatre ensemble. The company went on to win awards at the 2001 San Francisco Fringe Festival and received public and critical acclaim for all 5 of their original productions. She moved to Los Angeles and opened Kinetic Theory Circus Arts in 2008 and shifted her focus to her circus-theatre work. Stephanie has since written and directed more than 30 original productions and served as artistic director and dramaturg for many others. Her theatrical work has been performed around New England (A Midsummer Night’s Circus- 2023 Circus Smirkus Tour), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, New York City, Washington DC, and in 10 countries including a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2015. Her unique approach to circus and performance training has inspired many professional dancers, actors, pole and burlesque performers as well as hundreds of recreational students and has also helped launch the careers of many professional circus artists. Stephanie’s students have graduated from Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal, Ecole de Cirque de Quebec, and are performing with some of the top companies in the world including Cirque du Soleil, 7 Fingers, and AIDA Cruises.

Stephanie moved to Brattleboro officially in June 2023 and has been busy with performing and directing projects including: “Ones From the Vaults” Brattleboro’s only Rocky Horror shadow cast, which will open in April and run shows monthly at the Latchis Theater. She also continues to teach workshops at circus schools and performs her unique mime, vaudeville, and burlesque acts around the US and abroad.
