Join us at SideStream Studio this Saturday, June 17 for our Future Funk & City Pop dance party! But wait, isn’t it also an anime party? YES! How? What are Future Funk and City Pop, anyway?
The short answer is “some of the best dance music on earth.”
In America, a lot of people know City Pop music from anime, as it was widely utilized in the soundtracks of countless popular shows. Future Funk utilizes City Pop tunes in combination with sounds and clips from those shows. But the story of this music predates the mainstream popularity of anime. City Pop is a genre that includes various eclectic forms of Japanese pop music that emerged in the late 1970s and remained popular through the 1980s. Initially it referred to Japan's Western-influenced "new music", but incorporates a wide range of genres and elements - including funk, disco, R&B, AOR, soft rock, and boogie.
Future Funk is a City Pop inspired form of the lo-fi EDM style known as Vaporwave that has evolved into a unique aesthetic in its own right, also taking inspiration and samples from anime of the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Come experience these kickass music styles and dance like you’ve never danced before! And maybe do it dressed like Sailor Moon.
